Southern Street Rodders was founded in 1973 – well officially anyway. The founding members had been part of Pegasus Bay Drag Racing club, but wanted to go out cruising, rather than racing their pride n joy all the time. They had been meeting up for awhile before finally deciding they should get the club registered in ’73. Back in the day, the rules were pretty strict, cars had to be pre ’48 of American origin only and had to be 75% finished – unless showing considerable promise. If a member misses two consecutive meetings without good reason – he’s OUT; If a member sells his rod, he’s given one month to replace it.
Today the rules aren’t so harsh, we allow any car of American origin pre 1970 or special interest showing considerable promise and you won’t get kicked out after missing just two consecutive meetings and we might give you more than a month to replace your Hot Rod if you sell it.
Our meetings are held the first Monday of the month at North Beach Surf club – also the starting point for our world famous BBQ runs that go to different destinations around Canterbury.
The BBQ’s have been going for over 10 years now and all hot rods, street machines, customs, classics and cool cars are welcome. Always a great time to ogle at gorgeous cars, talk tall tales and get fed!
